Beyond the Wall

Meera, Bran and Hodor comes to a sealed door that Hodor barely manages to open. On the other side, Meera repeatedly orders Hodor to “hold the door” shut against the wights while they flee. While Meera escapes carrying Bran, Hodor is presumably killed by the wights. In the vision, Bran becomes overwhelmed by the split consciousness and unintentionally wargs into the young Hodor (then named Wylis), forging a connection between the past and present and forcing Wylis to witness his own death, causing him to suffer a seizure. With Bran’s consciousness inside his head, Wylis hears the echoes of Meera’s orders, and begins to slur the words “hold the door” over and over again until “Hodor” is all that he can say.

Bran splits his consciousness by both remaining in the vision and simultaneously warging into Hodor in the present, whilst Meera kills a White Walker but Bran’s direwolf Summer is killed defending her from the wights. The Night’s King enters the cave and kills the Three-Eyed Raven, causing him to disappear from the vision. As Bran, Meera and Hodor make their escape, Leaf sacrifices herself to hold back the wights.

Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven enter a vision to transfer the Three-Eyed Raven’s knowledge to Bran. As Meera prepares to leave, she notices the air becoming cold and investigates outside. She finds the army of wights, accompanied by the White Walkers. Meera runs inside to rescue Bran, killing a White Walker in the process, while the Children of the Forest attempt to hold back the wights as the cave is overrun. Bran, in the vision, witnesses his father Eddard leaving for the Vale of Arryn, as a young Hodor looks on. Bran hears Meera’s cries from within the vision and the Three-Eyed Raven advises him to listen to her.

At the Wall

Jon, Davos and Sansa examine their odds of retaking Winterfell from the combined forces of the Boltons, Umbers and Karstarks. Jon points out that the other Northern houses, such as House Manderly of White Harbor and House Mormont of Bear Island, have not declared for the Boltons yet, and Sansa suggests that the Tullys will fight for the Starks as well, though she lies to Jon that she knows this from a raven sent to Winterfell while she was the Boltons’ prisoner. As they prepare to leave Castle Black, Sansa orders Brienne to travel to the Riverlands and recruit Brynden. Jon, Davos, Sansa, Brienne, Melisandre, Tormund, and Podrick Payne depart Castle Black.

JON: New dress?
SANSA: I made it myself. Do you like it?
JON: Yeah, it’s… I like the wolf bit.
SANSA: Good, because I made this for you. I made it like the one Father used to wear. As near as I can remember.
JON: Thank you, Sansa.
SANSA: You’re welcome.

Beyond the Wall

Bran decides to observe a vision without the Three-Eyed Raven. Rather than transport himself to the past, Bran remains in the present, and witnesses a massive army of wights led by the Night’s King, who touches him whilst in the vision. Bran awakens to find an icy scar on his wrist where the Night’s King touched him, and the Three-Eyed Raven warns that he must leave, as the Night’s King has marked him and is now able to enter the cave.

BRAN: He saw me, the Night King! He saw me!
THREE-EYED RAVEN: He touched you.
BRAN: I don’t know. He was close, but…
THREE-EYED RAVEN: He touched you. He knows you are here. He’ll come for you.
BRAN: But he can’t get in.
THREE-EYED RAVEN: He can now. His mark is on you. You must leave, all of you.
MEERA: Come on, Hodor. Help me with the sledge.
HODOR: Hodor.
BRAN: I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.
THREE-EYED RAVEN: The time has come.
BRAN: The time for what?
THREE-EYED RAVEN: For you to become me.
BRAN: But am I ready?

On the Iron Islands

At the Kingsmoot, Yara makes her claim to the Salt Throne. Doubt is placed on her as the Iron Islands have never had a queen and the last remaining male heir, Theon, has returned, but Theon silences the doubters by backing her claim. As the crowd begins to sway in Yara’s favor, Euron Greyjoy arrives and stakes his claim. When Yara accuses him of killing Balon, Euron freely admits to the murder, while denouncing him as having led the Ironborn to ruin. Euron promises to conquer Westeros by marrying Daenerys Targaryen and offering her the Iron Fleet, and is chosen as king. After his coronation by drowning and resuscitation, Euron decides to kill Theon and Yara, but discovers that they and their remaining loyalists have commandeered the best ships of the Iron Fleet and fled. Undaunted, Euron orders the entire populace of the Iron Islands to begin construction on a new fleet.

AERON GREYJOY: We speak in the presence of the Drowned God. In his name we gather today to choose a new king as our leader. Who makes a claim?

Jorah reveals his greyscale affliction to Daenerys. He admits his love for her and begins to leave, but Daenerys emotionally orders him to find a cure and return to her so that he can be by her side when she conquers Westeros. Daenerys, Daario and the Dothraki depart Vaes Dothrak.

DAENERYS: I banished you twice. You came back twice. And you saved my life. So I can’t take you back and I can’t send you away.
JORAH: You must send me away.

In Meereen

Tyrion and Varys note that an uneasy but stable peace has fallen over Meereen since they forged their pact with the Masters. In order to preserve the peace and public support for Daenerys, Tyrion summons the red priestess Kinvara, who says that she believes that Daenerys is the chosen one of the Lord of Light and declares that her priests will spread her message. Varys, dubious of the supernatural, interjects and points out that Melisandre also believed that Stannis was the chosen one before his defeat at Winterfell, but Kinvara silences him by recounting how he was castrated. She pledges her support, as she is confident that Daenerys is the chosen one.

TYRION: Thank you for travelling all this way. I know from personal experience how uncomfortable the journey can be. The truth is we need your help. We had hoped that we could somehow persuade you to…
KINVARA: You don’t need to persuade me. I came to help. Daenerys Stormborn is the one who was promised. From the fire she was reborn to remake the world.
TYRION: Yes.
KINVARA: She has freed the slaves from their chains and crucified the Masters for their sins.
TYRION: She did indeed.
KINVARA: Her dragons are fire made flesh, a gift from the Lord of Light. But you heard all of this before, haven’t you? On the Long Bridge of Volantis. The dragons will purify nonbelievers by the thousands, burning their sins and flesh away.

VARYS: A man named Stannis Baratheon was anointed as the chosen one by one of your priestesses. He, too, had a glorious destiny. He attacked King’s Landing and was soundly defeated by the man standing beside me. Last I had heard, he had been defeated again, this time at Winterfell and this time for good.
TYRION: We’d be most grateful for any support you could provide the queen.
VARYS: I suppose it’s hard for a fanatic to admit a mistake. Isn’t that the whole point of being a fanatic? You’re always right. Everything is the Lord’s will.
KINVARA: Everything is the Lord’s will. But men and women make mistakes. Even honest servants of the Lord.
VARYS: And you, an honest servant of the Lord, why should I trust you to know any more than the priestess who counseled Stannis?
TYRION: My friend has a healthy skepticism of religion, but we are all loyal supporters of the queen.
KINVARA: Everyone is what they are and where they are for a reason. Terrible things happen for a reason. Take what happened to you, Lord Varys, when you were a child. If not for your mutilation at the hand of a second-rate sorcerer, you wouldn’t be here helping the Lord’s Chosen bring his light into the world. Knowledge has made you powerful. But there’s still so much you don’t know. Do you remember what you heard that night when the sorcerer tossed your parts in the fire? You heard a voice call out from the flames. Do you remember? In the Iron Islands, Euron Greyjoy wins the Kingsmoot despite confessing to killing Balon, causing Yara and Theon to flee. Beyond the sea, Daenerys learns about Jorah’s greyscale. At Meereen, a red priestess, Kinvara, meets Tyrion and Varys and offers to support Daenerys. Bran’s unaccompanied vision causes him to be touched by the Night’s King, making the cave vulnerable. The Night’s King, along with White Walkers and hordes of wights, ambush the cave, killing the Three-Eyed Raven, several Children of the Forest, Bran’s direwolf Summer, and Hodor.

In Braavos

Jaqen H’ghar tells Arya about the history of the Faceless Men, who originated as slaves in Valyria and killed their masters before finding a new home in the Narrow Sea, where they founded Braavos. He then offers her another assignment, warning her that she will not be given a third chance and suggesting that she will be killed if she fails.

THE WAIF: You’ll never be one of us, Lady Stark.
JAQEN H’GHAR: She has a point. None of the first Faceless Men were born to lords and ladies. They began as slaves in the mines of Valyria.
ARYA: Who was the first?
JAQEN H’GHAR: He was no one. The Many-Faced God taught him how to shed his face and how to give the gift. The man taught others in exchange for their service. Many served, many more gifts were given. Soon all the masters and overseers were gone and the Faceless Men fled.
ARYA: Where did they go?
JAQEN H’GHAR: Here. They founded the Free City of Braavos and built this house. These were the faces they wore in life when they were not wearing others. The first Faceless Men. And now a girl is one of them, if a girl desires.
ARYA: A girl has no desires. Who?
JAQEN H’GHAR: An actress who calls herself Lady Crane. She performs at the theater in Sheelba Square. A girl has been given a second chance. There will not be a third. One way or another, a face will be added to the hall.
