“Every man I have ever known has fallen in love with Gilda and awakened with me.” Rita Hayworth (17 October 1918 – 14 May 1987)
Rita Hayworth (born Margarita Carmen Cansino; October 17, 1918 – May 14, 1987) was an American dancer and film actress who achieved fame during the 1940s as one of the era’s top stars. Appearing first as Rita Cansino, she agreed to change her name to Rita Hayworth and her natural dark brown hair color to dark red to attract a greater range of roles. Her appeal led to her being featured on the cover of Life magazine five times, beginning in 1940.
Rita Hayworth appeared in a total of 61 films over 37 years. She is one of six women who have the distinction of having danced on screen with both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. She is listed by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 Greatest Stars of All Time. Read more: Wikipedia.
There never was a woman like Gilda
I love old movies, especially in black and white with noir theme. Gilda, 1946, is the pinnacle of these films. I would write something about this movie as some information to the gifs of Rita Hayworth performing Gilda when I found this great review of the movie, from Bette’s Classic Movies Blog:
Gilda, directed by Charles Vidor, is the quintessential film noir in every sense. It features a wonderfully adventurous performance from Rita Hayworth in one of the most iconic screen performances ever, Glenn Ford’s quietly disturbed portrayal of Gilda’s spurned lover, and some of the most beautiful lighting ever to grace the silver screen.
The story is fairly simple. Johnny Farrell (Glenn Ford) is hired by shady casino runner Ballin Mundson (George Macready) to front the casino. He is taken under Mundson’s wing and treated as his companion and henchman. Mundson comes back from a holiday, quite unexpectedly, with a new wife. When Farrell and Mundson open the door to her boudoir, one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history is created.
We see in Johnny and Gilda’s eyes that there is a history there. The rest of the film is spent with Johnny trying to control the passionate and wild Gilda – under orders from his boss – and the two of them struggling with their suppressed love/hate relationship.
Charles Vidor, director of films “Love Me Or Leave Me” and “Cover Girl”, masterfully directs this classic. His use of shadows to portray the development of characters is incredible. We first see Gilda in a light off-the-shoulder dressing gown, lit in a white wash that makes her skin seem incandescent. As the film progresses, not only the lighting for her, but also her costumes (by Jean Louis), become more seductive and dark.
Glenn Ford gives a sterling performance as the fundamentally flawed and unlikeable Johnny Farrell. From the beginning he is a downright cheat and a gambler. You get the strong impression he has driven Gilda slightly insane with his uncertainty and his mood swings. The way that Glenn Ford’s face often shows little or no emotion, gives you the exact impression you want from this character.
Rita Hayworth’s performance is historic. She was made to play this part of the temptress, Gilda. It’s one of the most unapologetically free performances of a woman on film, and the overall impression of her is inescapably of a powerful woman who isn’t suppressed by the men around her. Everyone knows that Rita Hayworth is no Ingrid Bergman, she has nowhere near that versatility, but she has the capability to be awe-inspiring in the right thing.
One thing most people seem to remember from this film is the “Put The Blame On Mame” scene, in which Rita Hayworth performs a very subtle striptease number which only involves the stripping of her glove. The dress and the slinky black gloves have gone down in history for their influence on fashion.
Victoria’s Secret is the largest American retailer of lingerie and was founded by Roy Raymond in 1977. 2012 sales were $6.12 billion with an operating income of $1 billion. The company sells lingerie, womenswear, and beauty products through its catalogs (sending out 375 million a year), website, and thousand of U.S. stores. But who cares about fashion? I do not. When I see all those angels, clothes are the last thing that I think.
Victoria’s Secret Angels
Although it now refers to the brand’s most visible spokeswomen (while the fashion show models are referred to as “Runway Angels”), the Angels started out as one of Victoria’s Secret’s lingerie lines. The models featured in the original advertising campaign in 1997 were Helena Christensen, Karen Mulder, Daniela Peštová, Stephanie Seymour, and Tyra Banks. Due to their growing popularity, the brand used them in several other advertising campaigns until Christensen’s departure. In February 1998, the Angels made their runway debut at Victoria’s Secret’s 4th annual fashion show, with Chandra North filling in for Christensen. Their line-up has been changed multiple times over the years, with one being officially released before each fashion show. The brand currently lists 10 supermodels on its website, including Miranda Kerr and Erin Heatherton, and recently launched a Facebook application highlighting Kerr and the Angels as well as Lais Ribeiro, Toni Garrn and Barbara Palvin.

Marisa Lee Miller was born August 6, 1978, in Santa Cruz, California, to Krista and Marc Bertetta. Curiously, she considered herself a tomboy growing up, with mostly male friends and little awareness of anything girly. Marisa makes us all wish they could be California girls. She first caught the world’s attention as an aptly named Perfect 10 model. From there, the Californian has appeared in such television shows as “How I Met Your Mother”, “Gary Unmarried”, and “Entourage”. Gisele is routinely ranked as one of the highest paid models of this century and may be one of Brazil’s best-known exports. New England Patriots fans will also know her as the sometimes outspoken wife of star quarterback Tom Brady. When she’s not rooting on her hubby, Gisele can be seen making cameos in various places including “The O.C.”, as well as in major motion pictures such as “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Taxi”.

Tyra Lynne Banks was born on December 4, 1973, in California. When she was 15 years old, Tyra started modeling while attending school in Los Angeles but was rejected by six modeling agencies before she was signed by L.A. Tyra’s not only the producer and host of “America’s Next Top Model”, but she was also the host of her very own self-titled talk show. If that’s not enough, she’s made appearances in 10 movies, authored books, released a couple of singles and made appearances in such television shows as “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, “Just Shoot Me”, and “Punk’d”.
#5 Adriana Lima
Adriana Francesca Lima was born June 12, 1981, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. She never thought about being a model. However, she had a friend at school who wanted to enter a modeling contest and did not want to enter alone, so Adriana entered with her. Both sent in pictures, and the contest sponsor soon asked Adriana to come out for the competition. Soon after, at the age of 15, she entered and finished in first place in Ford’s “Supermodel of Brazil” model search. Adriana completes the grand slam of Brazilians on our top 10 list. The wife of former NBA player Marko Jaric, when she’s on the screen she commands attention. #8 Daniela Pestova
Daniela Peštová was born on October 14, 1970, in Teplice, Czech Republic, and was discovered by the Madison Modeling Agency’s Dominique Caffin. The first of three original Victoria’s Secret Angels to make our top 10, Daniela is arguably the closest thing to a recluse that you’ll find on this list. Of course, that hasn’t stopped this Czech Republic blond beauty from becoming one of the most accomplished models in history and being the only Victoria’s Secret model to be featured on the cover of the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue on three separate spectacular occasions.
#9 Laetitia Casta
Laetitia Marie Laure Casta was born 11 May 1978, in Pont-Audemer, Normandy, France. Her mother, Line Blin, is from Normandy. Her father, Dominique Casta, is from Corsica. This French beauty first captured the hearts of men worldwide in the early 1990s as a GUESS girl before moving on to work with practically every other top designer in the industry. While we’re only a few years into this decade, Laetitia’s star is clearly on the rise. Since 2010 she’s starred in four movies released in her home country of France, as well as the English language Lionsgate 2012 thriller, “Arbitrage”.
#10 Izabel Goulart
Maria Izabel Goulart Dourado was born on October 23, 1984, in São Carlos, São Paulo, Brazil. She is of Italian descent and has four brothers and one sister. Since then, Izabel has appeared on HBO’s “Entourage”, as well as in a brief cameo role as Charlie Harper’s date in “Two and a Half Men”.
