Beyond the Wall

Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven observe a vision of Eddard Stark, Lord Howland Reed, and several other northern soldiers arriving at the Tower of Joy in Dorne’s Red Mountains at the climax of Robert’s Rebellion. Ser Arthur Dayne and Ser Gerold Hightower greet Ned as he arrives. Bran remarks that Ser Arthur Dayne was the best swordsmen his father ever saw. Eddard states that Prince Rhaegar and the Mad King have been killed and wonders why Dayne was not present at the Battle of the Trident. Dayne replies that he has been ordered to stay at the tower. After Ned demands to know where his sister is, a battle ensues. Dayne, only one wielding dual swords, easily cuts down several of the northern soldiers on his own, including Howland.

BRAN: That’s my father.
THREE-EYED RAVEN: The man beside him is Howland Reed, Meera’s father.

BRAN: Ser Arthur Dayne.
THREE-EYED RAVEN: The Sword of the Morning.
BRAN: Father said he was the best swordsman he ever saw.

DAYNE: Lord Stark.
EDDARD: I looked for you on the Trident.
DAYNE: We weren’t there.
HIGHTOWER: Your friend the usurper would lie beneath the ground if we had been.
EDDARD: The Mad King is dead. Rhaegar lies beneath the ground. Why weren’t you there to protect your prince?
DAYNE: Our prince wanted us here.
EDDARD: Where’s my sister?
DAYNE: I wish you good fortune in the wars to come. And now it begins.
EDDARD: No. Now it ends.
