Mother’s Mercy

Episode s05e10: Mother’s Mercy. Directed by David Nutter. Written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss. Original Air Date: June 14, 2015. Sinopse: Jon sends Sam, Gilly and her child to Oldtown for Sam to become a maester. Selyse hangs herself and half Stannis’ army deserts him. As Stannis prepares for the siege, they are attacked and defeated by the Boltons. Brienne finds Stannis alive and apparently kills him. Sansa manages to escape her room and is caught by Myranda, who is killed by Reek before he and Sansa jump off the castle’s wall. Cersei finally confesses to her sins and is forced to walk naked to the Red Keep as the people of the city shout at her. She is received by a new member of the Kingsguard: Ser Robert Strong. Jaime, Myrcella, Bronn and Trystane sail away from Dorne. After Myrcella tells Jaime that she knows she is his daughter, her nose starts bleeding, having been poisoned by Ellaria. Using a face from the House of Black and White, Arya infiltrates the brothel Ser Meryn is in and kills him after revealing her identity. Jaqen commits suicide to appease the Many-Faced God, though the waif points out that “Jaqen” never really existed. Because Arya put on a face without being “No One”, she goes blind. In Meereen, Varys arrives and starts to rule the city with Tyrion, Grey Worm and Missandei, while Daario and Jorah go on a mission to find Daenerys, who, far away, is found by a large number of Dothraki riders. At Castle Black, a group of brothers, including Alliser and Olly, partake in a mutiny where they each stab Jon, whom they view as a traitor for saving the wildlings, and leave him to die. At the Wall

Jon sends Samwell to Oldtown to become a maester along with Gilly and her baby, acknowledging (and even somewhat endorsing) the romantic relationship blossoming between Samwell and Gilly. Davos arrives on orders from Stannis shortly after to ask for supplies and Wilding reinforcements, but Jon refuses, reminding Davos that the Wildlings will never fight for Stannis. Melisandre arrives soon after; her demeanour leads Jon and Davos to realise that Stannis has been defeated and that princess Shireen is dead.

Jon: He raised his hands and they all stood up at once. Tens of thousands of them. The biggest army in the world.
Sam: So what are you gonna do?
Jon: I’m gonna hope they don’t learn how to climb the Wall.
Sam: But the dragonglass…
Jon: No one’s ever getting that back now. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Not unless we had a mountain of it.
Sam: But you killed a white walker.
Jon: With Longclaw. I saw them shatter steel axes like they were glass. But Longclaw…
Sam: Is Valyrian steel. How many Valyrian steel swords are left in the Seven Kingdoms?
Jon: Not enough. The first Lord Commander in history to sacrifice the lives of sworn brothers to save the lives of wildlings. How’s it feel to be friends with the most hated man in Castle Black?
Sam: You were friends with me when I first came here. And I wasn’t winning any elections back then.
Jon: Here’s to us, then. Long may they sneer. What?
Sam: I wanted to ask you something. To ask something of you. Send me, Gilly, and the baby to Oldtown so I can become a maester. That’s what I’m meant to be. Not this.
Jon: I need you here, Sam. If you leave, who’s left to give me advice I trust?
Sam: Well, there’s Edd. I’d be more use to you as a maester. More use to everyone now that Maester Aemon is gone. The Citadel has the world’s greatest library. I’ll learn about history, strategy, healing. And other things, things that will help when– when they come. If Gilly stays here, then she’ll die. And the baby that she named after me will die. And I’ll end up dying, too, trying to protect them. Which means that the last thing that I’ll see in this world will be the look in her eyes when I fail them. And I’d rather see a thousand white walkers than see that.
Sam: Thank you.
Jon: You know that the Citadel will make you swear off women, too.
Sam: Oh, they’ll bloody try.
Jon: Sam.
Sam: What?
Jon: Sam. You had just been beaten half to death. How did you–
Sam: Oh, very carefully.
Jon: I’m glad the end of the world’s working out well for someone.
Sam: I’ll come back.
Jon: To your return.
Sam: To my return.

Davos: Who came to your aid? Stannis. Now he needs you.
Jon: We don’t have enough men to make any difference.
Davos: The wildlings will make a difference.
Jon: The wildlings will never fight for Stannis. I told him before.
Davos: You saved their bloody lives. If they’re gonna live in the Seven Kingdoms, safe behind our Wall, they ought to fight for the damn place.
Jon: It’s not their fight.
