In the North

The weather conditions at Stannis’ camp drastically improve, clearing the route towards Winterfell. Melisandre takes credit, claiming that as a result of Shireen’s sacrifice, the Red God has made good on his promise. However, Stannis, still reeling over his daughter’s sacrifice, treats Melisandre coldly. He then receives news that all of his sellswords have deserted, presumably in disgust over his public sacrifice of Shireen, leaving him with only half of his army and no cavalry. In addition, Selyse has hanged herself in grief. When he returns to camp, he learns that Melisandre has fled. Despite all of these setbacks. Stannis orders his remaining troops to march forward towards Winterfell.

Melisandre: The Lord of Light has made good on his promise, my king. His fires have melted the snows away. The way ahead is clear.
Stannis: We ride for Winterfell.
Melisandre: And you will take it. The Lord has shown me Bolton banners burning. You will receive what is yours by right.

Man #1: Your Grace.
Stannis: Prepare to form up.
Man #1: Your Grace.
Stannis: Tell me.
Man #1: The men, many deserted before dawn.
Stannis: How many?
Man #1: Nearly half. All the sellswords with all the horses.
Man #2: Your Grace.
Stannis: Speak up. Can’t be worse than mutiny.

Man: Your Grace. The Lady Melisandre was just seen riding out of camp.
Stannis: Get the men into marching formation. On to Winterfell.

At Winterfell, Sansa manages to escape her room using the corkscrew she stole and lights a candle in the ruined tower to signal for help. Brienne and Podrick, who have been camping in the nearby forest, see Stannis’s army approaching, and Brienne leaves to take revenge on Stannis, failing to see the lit candle.

Podrick: My lady! Stannis. Stannis Baratheon is coming. His whole army.
Brienne: How do you know it’s Stannis?
Podrick: They’re carrying his flaming heart banners. From the Blackwater. I’ll never forget it.
