In Braavos

Arya watches as the man with Jaqen H’ghar’s face gives water to another man. He leaves to pray, and Arya approaches Jaqen and demands that he begin teaching her to be a Faceless Man. Jaqen reminds her of the phrase “valar dohaeris”, which means “all men must serve”, and accuses Arya of only wanting to serve herself. She turns and sees that the praying man has died, and two servants come to take his body away, but ignore Arya when she asks what they are doing with the body.

Later, Arya is approached by the Waif, who asks her who she is. Arya replies that she is no one, but the Waif is dissatisfied with her answer and begins to beat her. Jaqen arrives and stops the waif, but, noticing that Arya was about to attack the Waif with Needle, asks Arya how she came to be surrounded by things owned by Arya Stark if she is indeed no one. Arya then takes her possessions to a dock, where she throws them into the water. She cannot bring herself to discard Needle, so she hides it amongst some nearby rocks, and returns to sweeping at the House of Black and White. Jaqen then takes her to a room where she and the Waif wash a dead man’s body.

Arya: I didn’t come here to sweep floors.
Jaqen: No? Why come, then?
Arya: You said I could be your apprentice. You said you’d teach me how to be a Faceless Man.
Jaqen: A man teaches a girl. Valar dohaeris. All men must serve. Faceless Men most of all.
Arya: I want to serve.
Jaqen: A girl wants to serve herself. Here we serve the Many-Faced God. To serve well, a girl must become no one.
Arya: Which one’s the Many-Faced God? I see the Stranger. I see the Drowned God. I see the weirwood face.
Jaqen: There is only one god. A girl knows his name. And all men know his gift.

Arya: What do you want?
Girl: Who are you?
Arya: What?
Girl: You, who walk in here with a coin you never earned whose value you do not respect. Who are you?
Arya: No one.

Jaqen: What are you doing?
Girl: We were only playing. The Game of Faces.
Jaqen: A girl is not ready.
Girl: Clearly not.
Arya: I am ready!
Jaqen: For what?
Arya: For whatever you want. To be a Faceless Man. To be no one.
Jaqen: Whose sword is that? It belongs to Arya Stark. Arya Stark’s sword, Arya Stark’s clothes, Arya Stark’s stolen silver. A man wonders how is it that no one came to be surrounded by Arya Stark’s things.

At the Wall

Stannis meets with Jon Snow, who is now sitting as the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. Jon tells him that he must refuse his offer to become Jon Stark, because of the oath he swore to the Night’s Watch. He asks Stannis how long he intends to stay at the Wall, as they cannot continue to feed his soldiers indefinitely. Stannis tells Jon that he and his army will march on Winterfell within a fortnight. Stannis departs, but Davos stays behind to ask Jon to have the Night’s Watch join them in taking Winterfell back from the Boltons, telling him that so long as the Boltons hold the North, the North will suffer, and suggesting that Jon might best serve the realm by helping overthrow them.

Stannis: Have you considered my offer?
Jon Snow: I have. And I thank you for it. You do me great honor. All my life I wanted to be Jon Stark.
Stannis: Say the word and you will be.
Jon Snow: But I have to refuse you. I’m Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. My place is here.
Stannis: I’m giving you the chance to avenge your family, to take back the castle where you grew up. To rule the North.
Jon Snow: I wish I could fight beside you. Believe me, I do. But I swore a sacred vow at the godswood. I pledged my life to the Night’s Watch.
Stannis: You’re as stubborn as your father. And as honorable.
Jon Snow: I can imagine no higher praise.
Stannis: I didn’t mean it as praise. Honor got your father killed. But if your mind’s made up, I won’t try and dissuade you.

Stannis: You have many enemies in Castle Black. Have you considered sending Alliser Thorne elsewhere? Give him command of Eastwatch-by-the-Sea.
Jon Snow: I heard it was best to keep your enemies close.
Stannis: Whoever said that didn’t have many enemies.
